“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10). A deeper dive into that Hebrew word “Simchah”… This Hebrew word for Joy comes from the root noun, “samakh” or “sameakh” which means “to rejoice!”  This root word is used so often in scripture to describe what we experience in the Lord and His Salvation!  And in Nehemiah 8:10, we even find that the joy of the Lord is man’s strength!  In short, God made everything perfect at creation, man’s fall in Genesis chapter 3 caused the world great sorrow, and Jesus, the Messiah, is the source of great, eternal joy, returning us to that state that God intended for us!  Living in joyful union with Him!  We are talking about God’s joy, deep joy, a fruit of His Holy Spirit at work within us (see Galatians 5:22-23), and something so much greater than surface-level “happiness.”  While the world confuses the two terms, we discover that, In Christ, even when there are sad things in life which limit “happiness,” we can drink deeply from the abiding Joy of the Lord, which is our strength!  Jesus coming means that the whole world, groaning in the pain of sin, can be liberated and experience the eternal Joy of God in Jesus, both now and forevermore!  Celebrate Joy!
